Ukraine’s new “” drone defense pilot and DroneShield’s recurring revenue growth point to the same shift: drone spending is moving from one-time hardware purchases to contracted software, logistics, and ongoing protection. In Ukraine, selected brigades can order FPV drones through DOT-Chain Defence while the Defence Procurement Agency handles contracting, logistics, and payment; the pilot covers 12 brigades with about UAH 1 billion in funding. DroneShield’s results show defense buyers are paying for continuous detection and protection, not just devices.

Commercial software is scaling too. AirData said it has logged 65 million flights across more than 850,000 drones and 470,000 pilots, with support for 180+ drone types and 60 flight apps, evidence that flight-data software has become enterprise infrastructure. Across defense and commercial markets, autonomous docking, fleet management, compliance, maintenance, and remote-operations tools are becoming the control layer that keeps drones flying. BVLOS Moves From Waivers to Managed Airspace Infrastructure

The FAA’s shift from case-by-case BVLOS waivers under Part 107 to a proposed Part 108 framework is the clearest signal that U.S. drone operations are moving toward standardized permits, defined constraints, and repeatable approvals. That matters because BVLOS scale will depend less on aircraft access and more on the infrastructure layer around it: authorization workflows, airspace integration, conformance monitoring, detect-and-avoid, and traffic-management functions.
