The bottleneck is no longer proving storage works, but standardizing how it plugs into congested grids and wins access.

The policy and commercial backdrop is moving the same way. A U.S. court upheld FERC’s queue reforms, PJM expanded surplus interconnection access, and SP Electricity North West said smart Active Network Management can bring forward a 30 MW BESS connection by three years. Capital is following access: OX2 bought a 200 MW/800 MWh Italian BESS portfolio, Centrica Energy signed a 99 MW battery tolling deal in Germany, Sonnedix secured €730 million for a 540 MW solar-plus-storage portfolio, and Saudi Arabia saw $1.16 billion of storage deals. For practitioners, the edge is now in interoperable controls, queue-ready project design, and contracted flexibility revenues that shorten time to connection and reduce curtailment risk.

PJM Errors and Czech Derating Turn Capacity Into a Compliance Game

PJM’s latest capacity-auction errors turned market-design risk into a direct valuation variable, with flaws in the VRR curve, intermittent-resource offers, demand response and import treatment, and a must-offer exemption for wind, solar, and battery storage. The revenue impact was measured in billions: one analysis estimated $705.1 million of suppressed revenue, while market-monitor findings linked the exemption to a $4.1 billion increase in auction revenue and omitted RMR plants to another $4.3 billion, with separate RMR overcharge estimates of $4.2 billion to $5.0 billion.

At the same time, the Czech Republic’s CISAF-based capacity market is formalizing storage revenue on infrastructure-style terms. It is technology-neutral, requires a 1 MW minimum, caps aggregated portfolios at 99 MW, and derates by duration, crediting only 12.9% for 1-hour batteries versus 37.8% for 4-hour and 50.7% for 8-hour systems. With net CONE at 2,314,645 CZK/MW/year and a price ceiling of 2,777,589 CZK/MW/year for new assets, value is shifting toward rule-bound availability income. Grid-Forming Moves from Feature to Procurement Premium

ARENA this week committed AU$6.52 million to UNSW’s 3.5-year PROFILES project to test how grid-forming battery systems interact with protection and relay systems in Australia’s National Electricity Market, directly targeting whether inverter-based storage can provide protection-quality fault current and system strength as synchronous generation retires. NTPC’s Iron-Air Pilot Pushes Alternative Chemistries Into Utility Qualification
