Compliance and Sourcing Rules Are Rewriting Robotics Supply Chains
India and the U.S. both tightened robotics sourcing this week, but at different layers of the stack. In India, drone makers and component suppliers are accelerating domestic production of propulsion and avionics electronics — including BLDC motor drives, ESCs, flight controllers, GNSS modules, optical-flow sensors, and power-distribution boards — at firms such as Zen Technologies’ Vector Technics, Agam Robotics, and Optiemus Unmanned Systems. The push is being reinforced by indigenous-content procurement rules, anti-China sourcing restrictions, PLI-linked incentives, and the National Drone Shakti Mission. PLI 2.0 targets about 30% localized value now and roughly 40% of key components by FY2028. In the U.S., the DoD signaled a harder sourcing line ahead of Jan. 1, 2027, when covered-country restrictions on electronics, PCBs/PCBAs, and other subassemblies are expected to become much harder to waive under 10 U.S.C. 4872 and 4873.
The strategic shift is clear: robotics competition is moving from a performance race to a compliance-and-supply-chain race. China-fabricated boards, magnet-bearing subassemblies, and other covered inputs increasingly threaten qualification, while India is building domestic alternatives in flight-control hardware and power electronics. Dual-sourced, traceable BOMs are becoming a procurement prerequisite, and value is moving toward non-covered-country electronics, compliant PCB/PCBA capacity, and local suppliers of flight-control, sensor, and power subsystems in India, the U.S., and allied markets.
